Characteristics of Firmicutae:
The Firmicutes
kingdom includes the so-called Gram-positive bacteria, which unlike other
bacterial kingdoms lack a second cell membrane above the cell wall. These
bacteria have a thick wall consisting of peptidoglycan, located above the cell
membrane, so they are stained purple by the Gram staining procedure by retaining
dyes, while other bacteria do not retain them and are stained pink.
Firmicutes are abundant and ubiquitous, and they characteristics are variable.
For example they can form highly resistant endospores, produce fermentations or
cause diseases.
